The following were some of the causes which led to failure of War of Independence 1857:

  • The revolt was mainly restricted to Northern India and was highly localized as a result it was not widespread.
  • The revolt was not supported by all the groups of the people of the country.
  • There was no powerful leader to lead the rebel soldiers as such the leaders were unable to co ordinate the movement and give it a proper shape.
  • The rebel soldiers lacked financial support from the section of the society.
  • There was shortage of weapons.
  • The weapons used during this revolt were outdated and were of no match for the modern weapons of the British army.
