When electricity is pass through the aq. solution of sodium chloride it decompose to form sodium hydroxide .this process is called chlor alkali process.
reaction:
2NaCl(aq)+ 2H2O(l) = 2NaOH (aq) +Cl2(g) +H2 (g)

in cathod= hydrogen gas
in anod= chlorine
uses:
hydrogen =fules ,ammoniun for fertiliserz
chlorine = water treatment, pesticides

the chlor-alkali reaction is as follows-
2NaCl(aq)+2H2O(l)=2NaOH(aq)+Cl2(g)+H2(g)

gas at anode- chlorine
uses-
water treatment
swimming pool
PVC
CFCs
pesticides

gas at cathod -hydrogen
uses-
fuels
margarine
ammonia for fertilizers
