For preparation of yellow coloured explosive liquid NCl3, react ammonia with excess chlorine.

NH3 + 3Cl2 -----> NCl3 + 3HCl

On hydrolysis, NCl3 gives ammonia gas and hydrogen chlorate.
NCl3 + H2O -----> NH3 + HClO
HClO is too unstable, which gives HCl and oxygen gas after breaking.

From HCl, you can get back Cl2 gas.

Nitrogen trichloride undergo hydrolysis in presence of hot water to give ammonia and hypochlorous acid.

Hydrolysis

Hydrolysis is a common form of a chemical reaction where water is mostly used to break down the chemical bonds that exists between a particular substance.

$$\begin{aligned}&\mathrm{NCl}_{3}+4 \mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O} \rightarrow \mathrm{NH}_{4} \mathrm{OH}+3 \mathrm{HOCl} \\&\mathrm{NCl}_{3}+3 \mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O} \rightarrow \mathrm{NH}_{3}+3 \mathrm{HOCl}\end{aligned}$$

Types of Hydrolysis

There are several types of hydrolysis, and we will look at them in brief below.

  • Salts
  • Acid and Base
  • ATP

Salt: This is the most common type of hydrolysis. Hydrolysis of salt generally refers to the reaction of salt with water and deals with the interaction of salt with water between cations or anions.

Acids and Bases: Acid-base-catalyzed hydrolysis is found in ester or amide hydrolysis. Here, the hydrolysis  process  occurs when water or hydroxyl ions react with the carbon of the carbonyl group of the ester or amide to form a new compound. The product of both hydrolysis is a compound with a carboxylic acid group.

ATP: Most of the biochemical reactions that occur in living organisms are in the form of ATP hydrolysis that occurs with the help of enzymes that act as catalysts. Enzyme catalysis allows the hydrolysis or decomposition of proteins, lipids, oils, fats and carbohydrates.
