Answer:

William Sydney Porter was an American writer who wrote under the pen name O. Henry. His short stories are well known for their ready wit, gentle  humor and surprise endings.

His story, 'Hearts and Hands' describes the chance encounter on a train, between two acquaintances- Miss Fairchild and Mr. Easton. The situation turns awkward when Miss Fairchild notices that Mr. Easton is handcuffed to a grim looking man. The man intervenes to save Easton from embarrassment and prevent the girl from discovering the truth about him.

It is only through the observations of their fellow passengers that the reader is made aware of the real nature of the relationship between the two men handcuffed to each other.

'Hearts and Hands' is a gripping story by O. Henry in which he has blended reality and fantasy. The image O. Henry has created in his narration have contributed to the surprise ending which is a typical trait in O. Henry's works. It describes a surprise encounter between two acquaintances on a train.  Miss fairchild with Mr Easton was that they were old good friends as soon miss fairchild remembered about him and they first met up in Washington in a crowd and she also liked Mr Easton as he heard and saw that he was a Marshall and she already indirectly said that she lived and spend rest of the days . The twist in the story is that the  glum faced man who was the marshall, and Mr. Easton who was going to prison for seven years for counterfeiting money. The detail was that Mr. Easton's right hand was cuffed to the marshal's left hand, when both men were right handed.
