{\underline{\overline{\bf{\mid{Calcium \:Carbonate}\mid}}}}

Preparation:

  • Calcium carbonate occurs in nature in several forms like limestone, marble, chalk etc.
  • It can be prepared by passing carbon dioxide through slaked lime.\sf{Ca(OH)_{2}+CO_{2}\longrightarrow CaCO_{3}+H_{2}O}
  • It can be also prepared by addition of sodium Carbonate to calcium chloride.\sf{CaCl_{2}+Na_{2}CO_{3}\longrightarrow CaCO_{3}+2NaCl}
  • Note:- Acess of carbon dioxide should be avoided since this leads to the formation of water soluble calcium hydrogencarbonate.

Properties:

  • Calcium Carbonate is a white fluffy powder.
  • It is insoluble in water.
  • Calcium Carbonate when heated to 1200 K , it decomposes to evolve Carbon dioxide.\sf{CaCO_{3}\longrightarrow CaO+CO_{2}}
  • It reacts with dilute acid to liberate carbon dioxide. \sf{CaCO_{3}+2HCl\longrightarrow CaCl_{2}+H_{2}O+CO_{2}}

Uses:

  • It is used as a building material in the form of marble.
  • It is used in manufacturing of quick lime.
  • Calcium Carbonate along with magnesium carbonate is used as a flux in the extraction of metal such as iron.
  • It is also used in manufacturing of high quality papers.
  • Moreover, used as an antacid, mild abrasive in toothpaste, a constituent of chewing gum.
