A meristem is a region of the plant tissue that is found in the root tips and shoots tips, where the cells divide to grow the plant.

Lateral meristems, also called as secondary meristems is one of two meristems which produces secondary tissues in order to promote radial growth by increasing the stem girth and thickness.

It is called as “Lateral” meristem because it helps the plant to grow laterally. The lateral meristem produces nutrients that help in the growth of the plant and in producing new outer layers. The cork cambium replaces the plant’s outer layer and the vascular cambium helps in transporting water and nutrients to the growing stem.

Lateral meristems are found in the thin layers along the sides of the stem and the root.
