Air constitutes of Nitrogen, Oxygen, Carbon dioxide, water vapours and other gases.

The composition of air is:

(i) Nitrogen : 78%

(ii) Oxygen : 21%

(iii) Other gases : 1%

Nitrogen : It is the most abundant gas present in air. The nitrogen present in air is essential for the growth of plants. Plants take in nitrogen directly from the atmosphere or the soil.

Oxygen : It is essential for all animals and humans for living. Oxygen is the second most abundant gas in air. It helps to let us breathe, supports burning and combustion, etc.

Other gases : Carbon dioxide helps in the process of photosynthesis. It is also helpful in formation of limestones. Water vapours present in air are responsible for maintaining the humidity and moisture in air. Ozone present in air helps in protecting earth from harmful UV rays by forming a blanket around earth.
