Afnan053: During sunrise, the rays have to travel a larger part of the atmosphere because they are very close to the horizon. According to Rayleigh's law of scattering, scattering is inversely proportional to lamda to the power 4, wavelength of red is large, hence it is least scatterd.

Light from the Sun near the horizon passes through a thicker layer of air and a larger distance in the Earth's atmosphere before reaching our eyes.

However, light from the Sun overhead has to travel a lesser distance. At noon, the Sun appear whitish or yellowish as only little blue and violet light are scattered. However, near the horizon, most of the blue light and shorter wavelengths are scattered. Thus, the Sun appear reddish in colour during sunset or sunrise....

■ At the time of sunrise, the position of the sun is very far away from us.

■ As a result, sunlight has to travel a large thickness of the atmosphere and a large proportion of the bluelight and shorter wavelengths get scattered by the air particles.

■ The red colour which has the longest wavelength is scattered the least and more red light reaches our eyes than any other colour.

》Hence, the sun appears red early in the morning.《
