Greed and deceit go hand in hand

Undoubtedly, Houghton’s ‘Dear Departed’ is a satire on man’s greed and hypocrisy. The vice of materialism has dehumanized human beings. According to the playwright the state of human relations in the current times is quite grim! The once quite healthy and robust relations have become quite tenuous! The canker that has undermined the strength of human relations is materialism.

In the play the playwright has beautifully shown how greed and deceit go hand in hand. We find Mrs. Slater indulging in deceitful activities; she misappropriates and possesses grandfather’s slippers, clock, and bureau assuming him to be dead; she takes the above mentioned articles in her possession before the arrival of her sister, Mrs. Jordan lest she should claim them her share in them too. She was provoked to do so under the influence of greed.

We must not give in to the provocations of greed as in the end, greed is bound to be embarrassed.
