When the carbondioxide is passed through the lime water for as short period of time...the solution turn milky in colour thus indication the gas is carbon dioxide....
the reaction --
Ca(OH)2 + CO2 -----> CaCO3 + H2O..
but when the gas is passed for a long period of time continuously then due to more saturation of the carbon dioxide in the solution the solution becomes crystal clear again....due to the formation hydroxide of the solution thus the solution becomes again colourless when excessive amount of CO2 is passed from it.....
The reaction....
CaCO3 + CO2+ H2O ----> Ca(HCO3)2 + H2O...
