guys plzzz explain the above given words.... I'm getting very hard to understand this old man at the bridge...

in these lines the narrator is a soldier who has been given the responsibility to look ou for enemies.
so he is watching the bridge and the ebro delta to check whether the enemies are arriving or not an will there be any attack from them.at the same time he sees that the old man is still sitting beside the bridge.

The soldier who is the narrator of the story is explaining that he was looking at the bridge and thinking himself that how long time would there be to see the enemy and listen the first voice about winning the war.....but the Oldman is still sat on the panton bridge
