The Highest common factor of a & b is 4.
The greater one (call that a) is 8.
Using the prime factor method of finding HCF :
a=8=23
HCF=22
Therefore b=22×x
The HCF is created by collecting together the common prime factors of the values and using the lowest exponents within the factorisations.
where x is some number greater than 2.
if x=1 then b=4
if x=2 then b=8 - so the HCF of 8 & 8 can’t be 4
if x>=3 then b>=12 which contradicts the statement that a is the greatest.
\therefore a=4
