We can divide the rectangle into two squares of side 10 each.

Each square contains a circle of diameter 40 and radius 5

The area of the spaces left at the corners of the squares is given by %

Area of the square - Area of the circle

Area of the square = 10 × 10 = 100

Area of the circle :

3.142 × 25 = 78.55

Area of the gaps = 100 - 78. 55 = 21.45

Area of each gap is :

21.45 / 4= 5.3625

The shaded regions are as follows :

At the point where the two circles meet below that point the shaded area is twice the area of one gap hence its equal to :

2 × 5.3625 = 10.725

At the corner where the diagonal divides the space the shaded area is equal to half the area of one gap as follows :

5.3625/2 = 2.68125

The total area is thus :

2.68125 + 10.725 + 5.3625 = 18.76875

= 18.76875

Step-by-step explanation:

= 18.76875
