Determiner is a word such as some, the, all, many, a few, my, etc. that comes before a noun to show how the noun is being showed.

There are many determiners that can fit in the blank in the given sentence but the meaning will be changed according to the use.

For example if we use the determiner ‘all’, it will mean he has lost all his friends. He lost all friends he had.

If we use the determiner ‘both’, it will mean he has lost two friends he had. He lost both friends he had.

If we use the determiner ‘many’, it will mean he has lost many friends he had, but he still has a few left. He lost both friends he had.
