• Here, a question is asked in the direct speech form, so we begin the sentence with 'asked' instead of 'said'. had it been a normal dialogue we would have used 'told' instead of 'said' in the indirect speech.
• The preposition 'to' gets eliminated in the reported speech and the pronoun 'you' changes to the third person 'I' in indirect speech.
• Finally, the tense of the verb 'are' will change to a simple past tense in the indirect speech format.
• Thus, the helping verb 'was' is used for the past tense verb for the singular noun 'I'.
