I agree with your question . The World would really be the best without any religion .
Religion always brings within us narrow mindedness and other evil things which prevents us from making this World better in several instances .
Blind faith
So let us start with one of the most common defects of religion - blind faith . Blind faith is the part of the religion where people are made to believe something and they accept the belief without any proper questioning or reasoning .
Blind faith is extremely dangerous in certain cases . Take the example of a fake priest who makes you believe something in order to supplement his income . This blind faith of people have led to several malpractises and people starts to believe illogical things .
This leads to argument , hate for each other which would not have arised if religions were absent .
Ignorance
The religions have put forward several instances where they have accused science . Without even noticing the truth about any statement , they have really done a crime to accuse the study of science .
During Galileo's time the Church accused several scientists for discovering theories and other facts . The question is "Why ? Why do we need religion if religion cannot help us in cooperating with ourselves in a society where there is no crime , no hate towards each other ?"
Benefits without religion
Without religion , the World would be saved from hatred with respect to communal bias as there would be decrease in racial discrimination and increase in equality .
Without religion there would be decrease in pollution because then statues and other useless religions items will not be immersed in water .
Fraud and fake people who carry out business in the name of religion would be punished .
There will be growth of rationality and science .
" Religion is the black hole for rational thinking , reasoning and truth ! "

Yes, it would be better, there would be much less war and hatred, loads of things damaged by Religion Wars (like 911) would never have happened, think about it, loads of nationalities would like each other and not hate on each other. Issues like preventing gay marriage would not exist, the world would be much better.
Think for a second. There would be many more people in the world. If there was no religion, WWII would pretty much not have happened with the Germans. The pilgrims came here because they were being forced to follow another religion and then years later the independence war happened. Also 9/11 never would have happened and ISIS would not be killing so many people.
In the past, religion has held people back from achieving great things that would benefit mankind. This still happens today. Without religion, the world would be a much less ignorant place and people would learn to accept truths. The world would be a much safer place to live. No bigotry or hatred or wars concerning religion.
However, Albert Einstein said " Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind.". I actually believe that this quotation is accurate. They balance each other out. It's like a non-overlapping magisterial; both types of methods answer any question ever asked, but they can't answer each others.
