Let the total amount be X rs.
A got 60% of the money = 60% 0f X = 60X/100
Remaining = 40X/100
B's share = 40X/100

Also given, B = A - 1170
40X/100 = 60X/100 - 1170
1170 = 60X-40X/100
1170 = 20X/100
X = 5850
Total amount = 5850.
Amount A got = 60% of 5850 = Rs.3510
Amount B got = 40% of 5850 = Rs. 2340

Alternatively:
B gets 1170 less than A.
A gets 60% and B gets 40%. Difference between their share= 1170
20%=== 1170
100%====X
X = 5850
A gets 60% = 3*20% = 3510
B gets 40% = 2*20% = 2340

Hope it helps.
