"“Helping hands are better than Praying Lips.”
by Mother Teresa is a proverb which elucidates helping a person in dire need rather than praying for him. If a man wants to worship god they can do better by serving by serving the poor and the needy. The real service to man is the service to god.
Everyone face problems and unfavorable circumstances. During such times we expect our family members, relatives and friends to pray for us. This is not a bad thing and we must make prayer a habit. But there are situations where it is necessary to extend a helping hand rather than praying. Praying is important and it may be helping in a way. But not all situations are the same. A man dying of hunger and thirst needs food and water immediately. He would be dead while we are praying for him.
Sometimes our situations demand prayers. Sometimes we find ourselves that prayer is the only thing we can do because we cannot help them either physically or financially because the person is in a serious condition, maybe fighting for his in the ICU of a hospital.
This saying elucidates that if man wants to worship god, they can do better by serving the poor and the needy. The real service to man is the service to god. This actually was the main teaching of many great saints like Buddha, Mahavira and Jesus. This is mainly because god is present not in the idols we worship but in every living thing around us.
Let’s take an example of someone who needs blood urgently or else will die. This situation requires immediate help. There are so many ways by which we can offer a helping hand in many situations. Help doesn’t have to be big or small. There are so many institutes for orphans, widows, etc. to whi we can contribute some to relief them.
The proverb is a way of saying that "the hands that serve are holier than the lips that pray." So we must always try to help our fellow human beings in need.
