Hey Friend,
The great irony of "The Star-Spangled Banner."
The great irony of "The Star-Spangled Banner."
You are about to embark on a whole new adventure in your life. Almost twenty years have been leading up to this moment, and I could not be more proud of you for taking this step. Studying abroad is said to be some of the best years of your life. It is where you forge eternal friendships, discover yourself, and learn things that will set the stage for the rest of your life. On this journey, though, there are a few things I want you to remember.

Chiefly, take this time in your life to let down all of your walls and enjoy yourself. Over the years, you have worked so hard to get where you are. It is time to have some fun and just try new things. Explore the things around you, open yourself to new experiences, and embrace every second you have. You are going to have some of the best and worst adventures of your life, so cherish each one for they will be the stories you tell down the road.
Additionally, realize that it is okay to be excited and sad. Leaving everything you know can make for a time of transition. Being in a new place and meeting new people can be overwhelming and make you feel as if you are truly on your own. Always remember that you have the love of all your friends and family with you and that you are never alone. Allow yourself time to adjust to your new routine and surroundings. That said even when you are adjusted, it is okay to not be happy one hundred percent of the time. You are human and you do have feelings. Before you jump to conclusions about how happy everyone else is, go talk to a friend. It is surprising how many people feel lost and directionless at some point. Take charge of your feelings and know that a bad day is not a bad life.
Also, be selective of people you spend time with. Just because you are starting a new adventure in a new place doesn’t mean that everyone has to like you. Always be respectful but surround yourself with people who make you better. Anyone who makes you feel less than, kick them to the curb. They are not worth your time or effort. The same goes for boyfriends. Remember that you deserve the best life has to offer. Do not play his games. If he is making you wait for him, flirting with some other girl, or is rude to you then you don’t want him. Stop waiting for him to see how unbelievable you are and start making time for the ones who saw it from the moment you met. Love yourself enough to know the difference between good friends and transient ones.
For what it is worth, I know you are bound to do great things with your life. Remember to have fun and not take yourself seriously. I can’t wait to swap stories about your new life. I love you endlessly and have so much fun!! See you in a few short months.
