Calculating Average Atomic Mass. The average atomic mass of an element is the sum of the masses of its isotopes, each multiplied by its natural abundance (the decimal associated with percent of atoms of that element that are of a given isotope). ... The atomic number of chlorine is 17 (it has 17 protons in its nucleus).

average atomic mass is just the mean of the all the masses of all the isotopes present in a element.
for example:- Chlorine has mainly two isotopes mainly cl35 and other being cl37 so it average atomic mass becomes 35.5.
hope it helped!

kaishviyadav: may be right
killer7291: may be?
