Al³+ is smaller than Mg²+ because as Al³+ has higher + charge so the attraction in Al³+ towards electron is higher than comparable to Mg²+ .
Because both have same electron in its nucleus but at outer orbit Al³+ has higher charge so it is attacted by more strongly. & size becomes smaller
