because when that salt dissolves in the snow

the resulting snow will have lower melting point than that of water. Hence get rid of snow quickly ,we put salt on sidewalks when it snows

1.)Salting icy roads and walkways lowers the freezing point of the water that forms ice which leads to melting and prevents falling snow or rain from being able to freeze.

2.)Though salt can be effective, it does have some negative impacts on the environment.
