The arithmetic mean of the distribution is 7.

Given: The first moment of the distribution about the value 5 is 2.

To Find: The arithmetic mean of the distribution

Solution:

  • The shape of any distribution can be explained by its moments. Primarily there are four moments, which are,

         1. Mean,   2. Variance,   3. Skewness,    4. Kurtosis

  • For any set of n observations, the moments about the origin are called central moments. The first moment about the origin is always zero.
  • If the moments are not about the origin then they are known as non-central moments. In such cases, the first moment can be found using the formula,

                                X = m + A

        where  X = Mean , m = 1st moment , A = changed origin

Coming to the numerical,  m = 2 , A = 5 ;

        ∴  X = m + A

        ⇒ X = 2 + 5

        ⇒ X = 7

Hence, the arithmetic mean of the distribution is 7.
