Learning languages is integral to communication. Children between the ages of 2 and 8 tend to pick up languages very quickly. Hence, in most schools, certain languages are made compulsory. Of these, English is one since it is spoken globally. The second language is either Hindi or the local language of the State. Schools affiliated with the state board have been following a two-language policy of English and Tamil in the State. At the same time, several private schools following the CBSE curriculum have been offering three languages – English, Hindi, and Tamil.
Hindi is one of the most spoken languages in India. Also, with many people relocating to different cities and towns across the country, the demand for Hindi is rising. While the state government is adamant about not allowing a three-language policy in Tamil Nadu, students have been facing many challenges in applying for Central Government jobs or finding employment outside the State. This led to students learning Hindi in private. CBSE schools like Alpha Education’s Alpha Wisdom Vidyashram Senior Secondary School offers English as the first language and an option between Tamil and Hindi as the second language from Class VI.
As an ex-student of the school and having opted for Hindi, I can tell you that this ensured that I could apply for jobs anywhere in the country since I could speak the language spoken by most Indians. I feel that most schools in Tamil Nadu understand the needs of students and offer Hindi as an option to students who want to take it up.
