the number of oxygen molecules are higher in HNO3. so that it reacts as only oxidising agent.
Its correct hope us...:)

Hey folk...

This concept of oxidising agents and reducing agent is totally based on oxidation states of elements, so only check their oxidising states for knowing their chemical nature.

The maximum and minimum oxidation state possible for nitrogen are  +5 and  -3 repectively.

Oxidation state of nitrogen in HNO2  +3. So, oxidation state of nitrogen present in HNO2 can be increased or decreased and hence it can act as an oxidizing agent or as a reducing agent.

Oxidizing state of nitrogen in HNO3 +5.
So nitrogen can only decrease it's oxidation state. So it acts as oxidising agents only.

HOPE IT HELPS..
