A Question of Trust by Victor Canning is the story is about a 50 year old man named Horace Danby, and everyone around him thinks he's a good and honest person. He designed locks and earned enough money to hire two servants to support him. Once about 15 years ago he was sent to prison because every year he committed robberies. This year he meets a woman who pretends she is the owner of the house as he goes to a house for robbery. He then comes to learn the reality of that lady after leaving and is arrested after 2-3 days.

Explanation:

When anyone talks about ‘honour among thieves’, Horace Danby gets angry because the young lady who cheated him was also a thief, yet did not follow this saying

  • Horace is a good citizen, but not an honest person, because every year he commits a robbery. He is planning robberies in such a way that he can that the money he collects from them for lasts at least one year and he could buy rare and expensive books with. Since he likes to collect rare and expensive books He buys such books.
  • In a grange named Shotover Grange, he decides to commit a robbery. He takes all the details about the house, how many servants there were in the house, what was the dog's name, how the wiring was in the house, the safe inside the house and even how many gems were in the safe area.
  • The real twist in the story comes when he reaches the grange to commit a robbery and a woman claiming to be the owner's wife enters. She is offering him a choice to forget that she had seen him if he opened the safe for her because she lost the safe code and had to go to a party. He does not know that he opens the safe for another thief and is not the true owner of the house.  Her appearance was such that he was fooled
  • He lets himself believe he's free, but he doesn't know he opened the safe for someone else without wearing his gloves, too. After 3 days, a police officer comes and arrest Horace saying his fingerprints were found in the shotover barn. Horace then discovers that he that he had been fooled by a lady who was herself a thief and from the same background as his. Hence, Horace gets angry whenever someone talks about honour amongst thieves as he had been cheated by one from his own community.
  • From the incident we can say that Horace was right in getting angry with young lady.
