In order to control their burgeoning population, Republic of China introduced one child policy or a policy which said that each married couple could have only one child. This has left deep scars in Chinese society as a single child born into a family got all the attention, was pampered and in many cases became spoilt or wayward. The uncertainty of life took its toll too; in the event of the single child's death in course of time, the family would be left with no successor nor for the parents to lean on anyone in old age.
