The toothpaste, being basic in nature, neutralises the acidic compound formed by the bacteria that can corrode the enamel of the teeth.

Also, the fluoride in toothpastes also forms a protective layer of fluoroapatite over the enamel of the teeth that protects our teeth from the action of bacteria
