Answer:
Dams are classed as (i) storage dams (ii) diversion dams (iii) detention dams, depending on the usage of the reservoir created by the dam.
Explanation:
Storage dams:
- This dam is constructed mainly to impound the excess river water on its upstream side during floods.
- The stored water is used when the river runs with a deficient supply.
- These are used to store water.
Diversion Dam:
- The purpose of this dam is not to store excess water behind it but to raise the level of water so that water may be diverted into a system of canals.
- The height of this dam is, therefore, relatively small as no reservoir is to be formed to store water.
Detention dams:
- This dam was built to keep floodwaters under control.
- During floods, the flood water is kept behind the dam.
- When the floodwaters recede, the water is gradually released at a safe rate.
Hence, there are three types of dams namely storage dams, diversion dams, and detention dams.
