Solar Eclipses form when the moon makes a shadow of the earth. Thus lunar eclipses are formed when the earth makes a shadow on the moon. Since the Moon's orbit is tilted by ca. A lunar eclipse occurs when Earth passes between the sun and the moon.

A lunar Eclipse occur when the Sun, Earth and the Moon are in straight line. The Earth comes between The Sun and the Moon.

A lunar eclipse can occur only the night of a full moon and it lasts for a few hours, unlike a total solar eclipse which lasts for only a few minutes at any given place, due to the smaller size of the Moon's shadow. And lunar eclipses are safe to view without any eye protection or special precautions, the moonlight isn’t powerful enough to cause damage to eyes.

Hope it helped.
