Electromagnetic trains float a bit above the railway track.This helps the train to move much faster than in normal trains were the train wheel and track are in contact.

Electromagnetic trains are the Bullet trains and TGV (Train Grande Vitesse) in France and Europe. They use magnetic levitation. There are strong magnets on the tracks and on the wheels or at the bottom of the railway coaches. Due to magnetic repulsion force the wheels of the train float a few mm above the track. They come in contact and then float again. That happens alternately.
So the friction force is minimized. So the energy used in transport is less than in case of the usual train. Also the noise is less. There is more comfort. These trains can go must faster on the tracks. The wear and tear is much less. So they last longer.
These tracks and coaches are must costlier. The trains run on those special magnetic tracks only. As these trains run at high speeds and impact on the rails is higher than usual trains, the soil strength must be higher. These tracks cannot be laid on all kinds of soil.
