(I) ACIDIC SALTS

The reaction between a strong acid and a weak base results in the formation of Acidic salts.

Example(1) :

Reaction between Hydrochloric acid and Ammonium hydroxide gives Ammonium chloride and water.

HCl + NH₄OH \longrightarrow NH₄Cl + H₂O

Example(2) :

Reaction between Sulphuric acid and Ammonium hydroxide gives Diazanium sulphate and water.

H₂SO₄ + NH₄OH \longrightarrow (NH₄)₂SO₄ + H₂O

 \rule{300}{1}

(II) BASIC SALTS

The reaction between Strong base and a Weak acid results in the formation of a Basic salt.

Example(1) :

Reaction between carbonic acid and Sodium hydroxide gives Sodium carbonate and water.

H₂CO₃ + NaOH \longrightarrow Na₂CO₃ + H₂O

Example(2) :

Reaction between Acetic acid and Sodium hydroxide gives Sodium acetate and Water.

CH₃COOH + NaOH \longrightarrow CH₃COONa + H₂O

 \rule{300}{1}

(III) NEUTRAL SALTS

The Reaction between a Strong acid and a Strong base (or) Reaction between Weak acid and a Weak base also results in the formation of Neutral salts.

Example(1) :

Reaction between Sodium Hydroxide and Hydrochloric acid gives Sodium chloride and Water.

HCl + NaOH \longrightarrow NaCl + H₂O

Example(2) :

Reaction between Acetic acid and ammonium Hydoxide gives Ammonium acetate and water.

CH₃COOH + NH₄OH \longrightarrow CH₃COONH₄ + H₂O
