Sound waves are produced by vibration that causes the molecules of a medium to form alternating high- and low-pressure fronts. These waves can travel through solids, liquids and sufficiently dense gases.

The mechanism of sound production is:-

• Sound waves are produced due to the vibration or collision of particles in the medium they are traveling.

• For example when they are travelling in the air medium, the vibration of one particle makes it collide with the adjacent particle and transmits the vibration.

• These vibration ultimately reaches out to the eardrum enabling us to hear.

• Sound waves are mainly longitudinal mechanical waves, where the direction of energy transfer and vibration or the motion of waves are parallel to each other.
