To convert ethane to methane

Explanation:

  • Ethane to methane: Ethane reacts with iodine solution to give ethyl iodide which on treatment with alcoholic KOH gives enthanol, that on oxidation forms acetic acid, which reacts with base to give methane.

CH₃CH₃  ⇒  CH₂CH₂I ⇒ CH₃CH₂OH ⇒ CH₃COOH ⇒ CH₄

  • CH₃CH₃  ⇒  CH₂CH₂I( In presence of I₂ and HNO₃)
  • CH₂CH₂I ⇒ CH₃CH₂OH(In presence of aq.KOH and KI
  • CH₃CH₂OH ⇒ CH₃COOH(In presence O and K₂Cr₂o₇+H₂SO₄.
  • CH₃COOH ⇒ CH₄(In presence of NaOH + CaO)

Answer =(Ethane)CH₃ - CH₃⇒ CH₄(Methane)
