Answer:

Explanation:

Chloride of lime is a compound which is prepared chemically by passing chlorine gas over calcium hydroxide (the lime) Ca(OH)2 and resultant chloride of lime has a formula Ca(OCl)2 where, the Calcium atom is attached to oxygen of (-OCl ion ) group while the calcium chloride is a compound where the calcium atoms are directly attached to Cl-atoms by ionic bonds.

The formation of the compounds are :

2Cl2 +2Ca(OH)2 --> Ca(OCl)2 + CaCl2 + 2H2O

Now, when the chloride of lime i.e. Ca(OCl)2 is exposed to air, it reacts with carbon dioxide to form calcium carbonate and releases Dichlorine monoxide as:

Ca(OCl)2 + CO2 ----> CaCO3 + Cl2O(gas)

So, in the above process the chloride of lime (calcium hypo chlorite) releases the chlorine gas.
