How could the fall of troy have been avoided?

Mythologically (if the war had not been fought to obtain trade routes, gain power, etc.) there were several things that could have happened, or not happened, that could have prevented the whole war from taking place.

  • If Eris had been invited to the wedding of Thetis and Peleus. No one wants to invite a troublemaker to what should be a festive occasion, so naturally the goddess of strife was not invited. Eris was insulted by this snub, so to make up for it, she threw the Golden Apple of Discord in the midst of their wedding festivities. Hera, Athena and Aphrodite all wanted to stake their claim to the apple, which resulted in what became known as the Judgement of Paris.
  • If Paris had chosen Hera or Athena rather than Aphrodite.
  • This might be stating the obvious, but if Helen had been married to someone other than Menelaus.
  • If the Oath of Tyndareus had never taken place. When Helen was of marriageable age and her father, Tyndareus, was trying to choose a husband for her, he could not choose among her many suitors for fear of angering those not selected, potentially causing trouble later on down the line. So to solve this problem, Odysseus, who was one of Helen's suitors but was interested in Penelope, made a suggestion: make all of Helen's suitors swear an oath to defend whoever became Helen's husband against any who wished to oppose him, regardless of who was chosen. Of course we know that Menelaus was chosen, and we also know that a great army was amassed (a majority being the former suitors of Helen) when Helen was abducted.
  • If Paris had been killed after his birth. I know that seems harsh, but just before his birth it had been prophesied that he would be the downfall of Troy. The Trojan prophet Aesacus said that he would have to be killed to prevent the prophecy from happening, but Priam and Hecuba could not bring themselves to kill the baby, so instead they left him on Mount Ida.
  • If Paris had upheld the Greek concept of xenia and not abducted Helen.
  • If Helen had resisted Paris' advances and had remained at home.
