Doping is the process in which impurities are added. A zener diode is a type that can be best described as PN type of junction- semi conductor. P are considered as electron rich zones while N are considered as holes.
In Zener diode the Holes and electrons will combine and thus the electrons will get deficient as they move towards the holes. The process, in general, is termed as depletion while this region is termed as depletion region.
The process of moving of electrons towards the holes makes the region much thinner. In a battery, the electrons moves towards the holes making the junction more thin.
