Carter found that the ritual resins had become quite hard. These had fixed Tut to the bottom of his solid gold coffin. The heat of sun could not melt it. So the solid resins had to be chiselled away to free king's remain from the box.

Carter said that if he hadn't cut the mummy free , thieves would certainly have found a way of avoiding the guards. Then they would have tom apart everything forcibly to remove the gold...

Hope it will help you out..

Carter faced a lot of difficulties in separating Tut's mummy from its coffin. First of all, he tried to use the intense heat of the Egyptian sun to loosen the resins. ... Besides, Tut was the last pharaoh who had died very young mysteriously. So the researchers wanted to know the mysteries related to it.
