Cold war ensured the safety of human lives by not becoming a hot war.

During the cold war, both sides were equally capable of doing damage to one another as they both are super powers. They had nuclear powers that could possibly wipe out most of the innocent population of those super powers. Even though, if one of the super powers initiated attack over another and disabled the nuclear capability of one side would end up holding nuclear power. But, both the super powers kept fighting in cold and increased their army stability instead of entering in hand to hand battle.

The action of the super powers is later known as Logic of deterrence which avoided the world entering another world war that would have been a full scale nuclear war.

Answer:

Cold war definitely managed to ensure human survival. In the even of a nuclear war, damage would have been done to both the sides, and no body could come out as a winner. Both the sides were so powerful that they could successfully retaliate each other's attacks and this could pose a huge risk of human survival.

So, by avoiding a real nuclear level war, cold war managed to ensure human survival.
