When Hyder Ali became Commander of the Mysore army in the second half of 18th century, he posed a threat to the Marathas, the Nizam of Hyderabad and the Nawab of Carnatic. The Marathas and the Nizam then allied with the British and fought against Mysore. Subsequent to that, the Nizam joined hands with the British and attacked the Marathas. The British were thus taking advantage of the rivalry between local rulers and turning them into their own victories. But Hyder Ali managed to woo the support of the Marathas and the Nizam and confronted the British and went as far as Madras. The British were then forced to sign ‘The Madras Peace Treaty’.
