Sri lanka got its independence in 1948.
Soon after it the democratically elected Sinhalese leaders adopted a series of majoritarian policies to guarantee their power by virtue of their majority.
They adopted Sinhala as the official language and gave immense advantages to the Sinhalese thus disregarding tamil.
Most Sinhalese were Buddhists and therefore Buddhism was announced as the official religion and then , the state would protect and foster Buddhism.
These majoritarian measures led to the constrains in the relationship between tamils and Sinhalese in sri Lanka.
