The "reformation" basically took most political power away from religious leaders, which led to the end of imprisonment, torture, and execution of "heretics" who dared question religious dogma.
It's much easier to "progress" in science and philosophy when you aren't going to be tortured and burned at the stake for asking reasonable questions, and looking for answers.
