The following events will depict how the Solidarity came into power:
1. Lech Walesa joined the striking workers of the Lenin Shipyard. He was dismissed from the services in 1976 for demanding an increase in the wages.
2. Walesa emerged as the leader of the striking workers. The workers under his leadership demanded various rights such as the right to form independent unions, release of political workers and an end to censorship.
3. Their movement gained such a huge support that the government agreed to sign 21 point agreement to end their strike. According to the Gdansk agreement, the workers could now form independent trade unions.
4. A new trade union called Solidarity was formed. The union became so popular that it registered more than 10 million people. When instances of widespread corruption came to the fore front in the country, the government led by Jaruzelski imposed martial law in 1881.
5. Many members of Solidarity were put into prison and the freedom to express opinions was taken away from the members.
6. In 1988, series of strikes were again organised by the Solidarity. The government in wake of uncertain Soviet support and declining economy began negotiations with the striking workers.
7. Solidarity under Walesa reached an important agreement with the government, whereby the latter agreed to hold free elections.
8. In the elections which were held, Solidarity emerged victorious winning 99 out of 100 seats and formed the government in Poland.
