The Marathas were no longer an empire when the British entered India, they had become a confederacy.

With most leaders choosing to rule their designated territories as sovereigns.

There were two primary reasons behind the defeat of the Marathas at the hands of the British-

Lack of unity which has been highlighted above.Outdated war tactics and weaponry - Absolute lack of Gun powder.
