In 1699,Guru Gobind Singh inspired the Sikhs to rule with the chant "Raj karega khalsa" however this grew the suspicion of Aurangzeb and he took harsh methods to curb their rise. After a brief span of peace and the death of Aurangzeb, the Khalsa group again started to rebel against the Mughal authorities under the leadership of Banda Bahadur. In 1765,they declared themselves as an independent kingdom, minting coins under the name of the Guru Nanak and Guru Gobind Singh. By the end of the 18th century it grew larger from River Indus to Jamuna but under different rulers. Tgey were United by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1799 with his capital at Lahore establishing a strong Sikh empire.

Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth and the last Sikhs guru transformed the Sikhs into a warrior community. Gobind Singh established the khalsa , or the brotherhood of the sikhs. The khalsa gives the community a deep sense of unity founded on symbolic acts.
