The people of the kingdom were happy with their melon king.

  • The given question is from "The Tale of Melon City" by Vikram Seth.
  • The story is a humorous one with moral at the end.
  • The people of "Melon City" appeared to be happy with little interest in the matter of melon being their king,
  • They seemed to be happy, as they felt the melon king might not interfere in their day to day activity as it was with their earlier king.

The people were not bothered about the melon king. They just treated him as an ordinary ruler. They knew he was foolish; none of them objected to his decision of hanging himself.

Actually people believe in the principle of laissez faire, which is the non-intervention of Government rules, regulations, privileges, tariffs, etc. People love freedom. It does not matter who their king or ruler is as long as he/she lets them live freely, they are happy.
