The instructor first put a belt around him to which a rope was attached. This rope went through a pulley that ran on an overhead cable. He held on to the end of the rope, and Douglas swam like this .for weeks. ... Thus, bit by bit, the instructor built a swimmer out of Douglas.

At first, he made Douglas swim back and forth across the swimming pool. He tied Douglas with a pulley so that he doesn't drown.
He told Douglas to exhale while going down and inhale while coming up.
He also monitored the movements of his legs and hands and told him the technique to stay above the water.
