Amoeba takes in food using temporary finger-like extensions of the cell surface which fuse over the foodparticle forming a food-vacuole as shown in figure. Inside the foodvacuole, complex substances are broken down into simpler ones which then diffuse into the cytoplasm.

Amoeba gather food from this surrounding with the help of the finger -like extensions called ,' Pseudopodia' and it forms a vacuole around it and when the particle is completely trapped it secretes the digestive enzymes which helps in digesting the particle.
◆If the food particle that the amoeba is trapping is Solid ,then it is called "Phagocytosis".
◆If the food particle that it is trapping is fluid ,then the term ,"Pinocytosis" is used.
◆Together both are known as ,"Endocytosis".
