how do epidermis make impervious to water and gases?

in epidermis there are specialized cells and junctions which are hydrophobic and there is a junction named desmosomes which is a hydrophobic but I don't know about gases.

in plants it secretes a substance called suberin which is a chemical that makes the plants impervious to water and gases
