Identify ALL sound devices such as alliteration, onomatopoeia, etc. How does it impact the text? What do you notice?
Identify text/phrasing/structure that is repeated. Is there any reason the author would use repetition like that?
Circle any words that are impactful or interesting. What does it reveal about the speaker’s attitude (tone) toward the topic? What mood is created through the word choice?
Include your personal reaction to the poem – look at the quality of the writing, if you identified with or even enjoyed the poem, or how you felt after the reading.
Record a universal theme (could be applied to other poems, stories, situations, etc.). What message did the author leave you with?
Reread the poem. If you are still having a hard time understanding the poem, repeat the annotation process!
